Some 2026 Predictions and 2025 thoughts

I love Christmas. I really do. When you have kids, and they believe in the magic man from the North Pole, seeing their faces on Christmas morning is incredible. In this lull of activity, I wanted to set down some quick 2026 predictions and maybe some thoughts on 2025. This will be in no particular order but let’s go:
The LA Rams will win the SuperBowl. I bet on them before the NFL season so this is more of a “my fingers are still crossed” type prediction.
2026 will be a HUGE year for the movie box office - sequels for Dune (cannot wait!), The Devil Wears Prada, Super Mario Bros, Scream, Star Wars, ToyStory, Spiderman plus a new Spielberg Alien movie, Supergirl a new Avengers movie and the Chris Nolan Odyssey movie - mean this could be the biggest year ever for the box office. Will Dune and Doomsday create a Dunesday ala Barbenheimer? I think so but not quite as big.
That being said, I think The Odyssey will slightly disappoint both critics and in box office. It’ll be good but probably compare unfavourably to Oppenheimer. The nerds are already out for lack of historical accuracy in armour.
There will be no lasting peace agreed in Ukraine. Trump doesn’t care, Ukraine (understandably) doesn’t want to give up territory, European nations could stop it if they got involved but won’t.
Labour pushing back local elections will become a bigger and bigger anti-democratic story in the UK.
But Keir Starmer will (just) survive the year. Rachel Reeves will not.
Anthropic will go public in the most highly anticipated IPO since Netscape.
The US Midterms will be terrible for Trump and some Democrats will stir up talk of Epstein Impeachment but they won’t pull the trigger.
Revolut will IPO in NYC.
The Conservative poll numbers in the UK will start climbing/Reform will start dropping.
AI will continue to progress unnoticeably - no big breakthrough.
Eth, BTC and SOL will not break new inflation adjusted highs.
It’s going to be a choppy year for all risk assets - stocks and crypto despite lowering inflation and lower interest rates.
One Battle After Another will (deservedly) win Best Picture Oscar
OK and onto some thoughts from 2025:
One Battle was my favourite film from last year. Sinners ran it close. Small one that I loved from the year before (but saw in 2025) was Snack Shack. Superbad vibes and now streaming on Netflix.
Most thought provoking book I read - Managerial Revolution by James Burnham
Most fun book(s) I read - The Salvation Trilogy by Peter Hamilton
TV Show(s) of the year - Andor Season 2 and The Pitt season 1
I took all social media apps off my phone and honestly don’t feel any the worse for it. Twitter was just making me sad. Have I substituted Reddit for Twitter? Maybe but it’s difficult to go cold turkey.
